California Temporarily Halts Residential Pesticide Spraying

Sacramento, CA, April 24, 2008 - In a move that some have suggested is a reflection of a legal ruling on the lawsuit brought against the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) by the City/County of Santa Cruz that has resulted in a temporary halt to the light brown apple moth (LBAM) spraying over Santa Cruz County, Governor Schwarzenegger announced a temporary postponement of the LBAM spraying statewide.

After meeting with various concerned parties, including Senator Carole Midgen, D-San Francisco, who has sponsored a resolution calling for a moratorium on aerial LBAM spraying, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said that the state would suspend all aerial sprays across the state until August 17, by which time further testing of eye, inhalation, respiratory and other potential irritants is expected to be complete
The Governor's office said the postponement of spraying was already under consideration for some time, and Schwarzenegger expressed confidence that the tests would clear the way for spraying to resume in late August.
